On my personal physical fitness journey, I met yoga and at first, she wasn’t nice, I was confused by the twisting movements and felt like I never got a break. Turns out, from the original holistic yoga practice, 22 recognized forms have branched off, focusing on specific needs (mind, breath work, ego-eradication, body strength, etc). Of these 22, only about 12 are even seen in the US. So where the heck are you supposed to start?
I asked two Yogi advocate friends with their own yoga instruction businesses for their guidance in how to make sense of a yoga menu for a newbie. Yoga is meant to achieve balance in mind, body, and spirit so to start – you should focus on which of those areas you’d like to address most and the other areas will come as you continue the journey.
